About this place
Hog Canyon is a network of technical motorized trails north of Kanab. It is rough.
There are roughly 30 miles of them, running through country that ranges from easy sand right up to extreme rock crawling. The trails take in steep inclines, rocky surfaces, narrow passages and deep sand.
They are made for four-wheel-drive vehicles, ATVs, UTVs, dirtbikes and other off-highway machines. A street vehicle will not manage, and nor will a two-wheel-drive.
Walkers, cyclists and riders may use them too. Keep your wits about you, because motorized users may not expect to meet anyone else out there on a blind corner.
There are trailheads at the eastern and western entrances. The western one has a staging area and an information kiosk. The eastern one has a kiosk. Riders coming from the east usually stage at the Crocodile Staging Area.

For the eastern kiosk, start at the same place and travel east on Highway 89 for 8.6 miles. Turn left onto Johnson Canyon Road and follow it 7.8 miles to the Crocodile Staging Area, on the left-hand side. From there, carry on west on BLM100 for roughly 3.9 miles. Turn left onto BLM104 and go south about 4 miles. Turn right onto BLMHC1, and the kiosk is right after the junction.

Every distance on this page is the driving distance. A short distance can still take a long time. The road may be closed for the season, covered in snow, or washed out. Many of these roads are dirt. Plan your route before you leave home. Out here there is often no phone signal to look it up on the way.
Nearest town and supplies
- Kanab, UT Directions
Kanab is big enough that you’d normally expect fuel and somewhere to buy food. Nobody from here has been to check, so don’t count on it if you’re running low.
Have you been here?
Fees and access change, and the records do not always keep up. If you have been, tell us what you found.
Thank you, that is recorded. It helps the next person.
Add road notes for this site
The thing we cannot get from any government record is what the drive in is actually like. If you have done it, this is the most useful thing you can leave behind. We read everything before it appears, and we print a first name with it if you give one.
Thank you. A person will read it before it goes on the page.
